Rodri Criticises England Referees After His Seven Yellow Cards Of The Season

Manchester City midfielder, Rodri has shown his displeasure with the standard of officiating in the Premier League. The Spanish and his team have witnessed some controversial decisions from the Center referees in many of their games this season.

In their last Premier League match against Newcastle United, Rodri was booked for shoving Guimaraes off the ball despite Chris Kavanagh not blowing for a foul after Rodri was stepped on by the Brazilian.

“To be honest, the referee [at Newcastle] was unbelievable in a negative way,” Rodri said when asked if players had a hard time adjusting to the rules, as they are constantly changing.

“We don’t understand many things that happened. We don’t feel that equal to some behaviours.”

The midfielder has missed some important match for the Cityzens this season. He was not available for selection against Arsenal in the Premier League. He was serving three match ban as a result of a red card received for violent conduct after putting his hands around Morgan Gibbs-White’s throat as they tangled near the corner flag.

“It’s difficult [to stay calm]. The referee doesn’t help much, but we don’t want the help, we just want it to be fair in both directions and I think Saturday they weren’t,” Rodri added.

“This season I have seven yellow cards with two or three tackles, the other are for I don’t know what, but it is what it is.”

Erling Haaland is another Manchester City player who has shown his displeasure with match officials this season. The Norwegian was visibly angry during a 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on December 3.

With the game deep in stoppage time, City’s Jack Grealish was through on goal when referee Simon Hooper blew his whistle for a foul on Haaland in the build-up, having previously waved play-on.

“Yeah, it is an officiating mistake,” Referees body (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb said on the ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’ TV programme.

“He does the hard work, he just hesitates a moment to see if an advantage is possible. But he recognises in his mind, thinking it through, that it was a strong challenge, it was reckless, he is going to have to caution.”
