Erling Haaland has on different occasions stolen the headline as a Man City player since he arrived at the Etihad from Borussia Dortmund more than a year ago. The Norwegian first season in England was full of record-breaking performances.
The striker becomes the first Man City player to break the Premier League scoring record in a season. He scored loads of hat-tricks and won the treble of the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League title, and the FA Cup.
One major attribute of thr strike is his determination to win, a quality that his teammate, Rodri said he shared with two greatest footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Both Messi and Ronaldo led their respective teams to many victories with their ability to singlehandedly win matches for the team. The determination to win under any circumstances is one of the many attributes of multiple Ballon d’Or winners and Erling Haaland was said to possess the same quality.
“He has a hunger to improve, always ready. In that way, he reminds me of Cristiano (Ronaldo) and (Lionel) Messi,” Rodri, another Man City player who contributed immensely to the team’s success in 2023 to AS.
Haaland did not face difficulty walking into the City starting lineup, the Cityzens had played the previous season without a recognised striker, therefore, he had no problem occupying the empty position on the field. Also, Julian Alvarez who arrived at the club at the same time as the Norwegian settled as Erling’s backup throughout the season.
However, Rodri explained that Haaland understood that he might not be given the opportunity to start every match when he signed for the Sky Blues.
“He understood that he came to another team and that he would not be involved (in the game) that much. That he would have to wait for his chances.
“These are things you adapt to. Now he is much more positive. He says: ‘Rodri, control the match. Don’t think about me.’ It is to understand the team. He has improved a lot.
“We must not forget that he is only 23 years old,” the midfielder said.
