Records Show Why Rodri Deserves Premier League Player Of The Season Nomination

Many highly talented players were selected as nominees for the esteemed Premier League Player of the season award. And while the shortlist consists of the top performers in the League this season, it is perplexing as to why Manchester City midfielder Rodri was not included in the list of finalists.

The Spanish midfielder is not only one of the best players in the league, but arguably the best player in his position across Europe. Therefore, his omission from the Premier League Player of the Season nomination would surprise many Manchester City supporters.

While all the nominees have excelled in the league this season, Rodri has significantly elevated his performance as a midfielder by contributing goals and assists while anchoring the City midfield.

Most Assists Provider Among The Holding Midfielders In The League

The Spain international is better than all other holding midfielders in the league this season in terms of goal contributions. In addition to his 7 league goals, he has provided 9 assists, three behind Ollie Watkins who leads the assist table in the league.

Only Watkins with 13 assists beat the Manchester City midfielder among the Premier League player of the season nominees. He has the same assists as Cole Palmer, one more than Arsenal duo Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, including his teammate Phil Foden who has 8 assists.

Top Scoring Holding Midfielder In The League This Season

The Manchester City midfielder his having one of his best seasons in terms of finding the back of the net. Despite his playing position, he has scored seven league goals this season.

Rodri has the same goal tally as Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice. Nevertheless, Rodri achieved this feat in 31 appearances, whereas Rice accomplished it in 35 league matches.

The Only Undefeated Player In The League This Season

In addition to his incredible performance this season, Rodri remains the only undefeated player in the league. He has never tested a defeat in all the 31 matches he has fixtured in this campaign.

The Spanish midfielder’s last defeat in a City shirt was against Tottenham in February 2023, making him arguably the most important City player on the pitch.

Manchester City has suffered defeat in only three matches this season: a 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton, a 1-0 defeat at the Emirate Stadium against Arsenal, and their most recent loss to Aston Villa in December 2023. It is worth noting that Rodri was absent from all three matches due to suspension.

Hence, with the presence of the Spanish midfield maestro on the field, the City team are a different team entirely, he always makes them a formidable force. So, the best outcome their opponents can hope for is a draw.

What Rodri Said About Lack Of Recognition Despite His Stats

The Manchester City midfielder asserted that he remains unfazed by the overlook of his efforts and contributions to the team during award ceremonies.

Rodri was a significant player for Man City last season, scoring the winning goal at Istanbul in the UEFA Champions League final and was named the player of the competition in a treble winning campaign.

Also, he had an incredible performance with Spain National team, he was named the player of the tournament in the UEFA Nations League after Spain won the trophy.

Despite his impressive accomplishments, he fell short of being recognized among the top five players in the world during the Ballon d’Or award ceremony.

“I am not surprised.. This is normal. I understand very well how things work in these individual awards. They are based on marketing, money and advertising,” Rodri said about his omission via Mail Sport

“There have been midfielders before who were also Spanish who did not get what they deserved. Do you understand what I mean? What ultimately matters to me in football Is what I achieved collectively.”
