Phil Foden might have to battle with Kevin De Bruyne for the number 10 role at Manchester City after he made his intention to keep playing at the position known to Pep Guardiola and claimed that he enjoys playing there.
For the past few months, the Englishman has been playing in the midfield due to the absence of Kevin De Bruyne. But he may lose his place at the heart of the City midfield after the Belgian returned from injury and made his first appearance since August 2023 against Huddersfield on Sunday.
“It’s where I want to be – I’m enjoying it a lot,” Phil Foden said. “Long may that continue. I seem to be playing my best football at the moment and I want to keep doing that.”
He claimed that he got more involved while playing behind the strike. And his performance in recent matches justified his statement. He was involved in the City’s match-winning displays recently. This season he has 10 goals and 8 assists in the Premier League and contributed to his side’s progress in the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup.
“You’re a lot more involved [in the centre], there’s a lot more to focus on. You’ve got a lot more people around you. It’s difficult and there’s still things I need to get better on and I’m trying to do that.”
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has hinted that both Phil Foden and De Bruyne can play together by joining Rodrigo in the middle of the pitch. The Catalan explained that they may feature together in some games while it may be impossible in other matches.
“They are different players but it’s true that in the final third, in the decisive moments, both are incredible. The impact in goals, in passes, is a lot.”
“Phil is playing unbelievably lately in that position, in the threats, and he feels comfortable.
“In certain games, of course, we can play both together in that position, in the pocket, in the middle, close to the box. In certain other games for stability, maybe not. So we have to see day by day.”
