Phil Foden Rejects World-Class Title, Disagrees With Guardiola

Manchester City in-form player, Phil Foden rejected being described as a world-class player. He claimed that even though he has scored a good number of goals this campaign, he still has a lot to learn and play for before he can be tagged ‘world-class’ player.

Phil Foden and Pep Guardiola

The Englishman was reacting to the compliment from his boss, Pep Guardiola after he scored 16 goals from the midfield this season and continues to deliver incredible performances every week.

Phil Foden claimed that he preferred playing at the midfield behind the top striker to play as a winger and he was handed the opportunity to show his talent at the heart of City midfield this season. This was made possible with the departure of IIkay Gündogan and the hamstring injury sustained by Kevin De Bruyne early in the season.

Foden judiciously used the opportunity to convince his manager that he has what it takes to become a better player as a midfielder. Guardiola was delighted with his performance and described the academy graduate as top-class.

“He has already become a top-class football player, Guardiola said. “Before he was a little boy with good actions and now he is a world-class top player. He’s so good. He can play everywhere but especially in central positions he is really, really, really good.”

Speaking ahead of the Manchester derby Phil Foden insisted he needed to maintain his form over a longer period to justify the compliment of the City manager.

“I wouldn’t say world class yet – I think I’ve got the potential to be but to hear that from the manager is special for me,” said the England player, according to Daily Mail.

“I still want to keep improving and try to be an even better player. I have to do it consistently in the biggest games and biggest occasions.

“To do it for a number of years – that’s when you get the world-class status. I’m enjoying the season and I’m in good form at the moment, so I want to keep that up. Sometimes it just clicks and happens.”
