Pep Guardiola Names City Star As Premier League Best Player

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was once again stunned by the performance of Phil Foden and after the match he described the Englishman as the Premier League best player this campaign.

Phil Foden and Erling Haaland

Foden was at his best again when the City welcomed Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium. The Englishman inspired his side to a 3-1 victory even though they conceded an early goal. He scored two goals while Erling Haaland scored the last goal toward the end of the derby match.

Guardiola described Foden as the Premier League best player after the match. The City manager said Foden has always been a talented player but with his performances this campaign, he has taken his game to another level.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Guardiola said: “It is the amount of games he is playing. He was always a talented player but now he is more mature and understands more the game, especially defensively.”

During the Manchester derby, Foden operated both at the left and right wing, he also came to the midfield to receive the ball on many occasions. Therefore, Guardiola commended his versatility.

“He can play middle, right, make moments and cut inside, play in the left, scoring from the left. What can I say? He is the best player in the Premier League right now for the amount of things he does. Unbelievable,” Guardiola said.

“When he scores two goals it gives me more pleasure than the other stuff. We don’t negotiate over that, the guy who doesn’t do that doesn’t stay in the team. He loves football, he lives for football. He is a joy and his work ethic is unbelievable.”

The City boss will hope that his talented players are at their best when they visit Anfield in their next Premier League match. They are currently a point behind their imminent host, therefore, a victory will put them in a commanding position at the top of the league table.
