Manchester United helped Man City to win treble for the first time in the club’s history in 2023 and become the second Premier League club to ever win the three most prestigious trophies after the Red Devils’ 1999 glory.
For the Cityzens, the journey was not easy, particularly towards the end of the season when the players were visibly overwhelmed due to the number of matches played. To Pep Guardiola, a win against the Red Devil in the FA Cup final at Wembley prepared his side for the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul.
While the victory at Wembley will remain a memorable moment for Manchester City, their local rivals wouldn’t like to be reminded of the encounter, not only because of the rivalry but due to the agony of failing to prevent the Cityzens from equaling their records despite the golden opportunity they had.
Two goals from Ilkay Gundogan, on either side of the match was enough for the Premier League champions to remind United why they are the best team in Manchester at the moment. After helping Man City to win treble, Man United players at home watching their rivals defeat Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul, a week after the FA Cup final.
Speaking ahead of another FA Cup against Championship side, Huddersfield, Pep Guardiola said: “I was not born in this country but I know how special the competition is.”
According to MEN, the Catalan explained why the victory at Wembley helped Man City to win treble “Beating United last year helped us arrive in a better mood for the Champions League final in Istanbul against Inter.”
“To win the cup against United was a little bit more special (than any other team), we have to admit it. For our fans, maybe more special.
“To have that rivalry is necessary in our sport. Like the big three animals in tennis Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal, the competition is there.”
