Man City Favourite To Sign A World-Class Midfielder As Rodri’s Backup

Manchester City might have finally solved their midfield problem following the report that they are leading the race to sign Joshua Kimmich, a world-class midfielder as Rodri’s backup player.

Joshua Kimmich as Rodri's backup

While Rodri has become irreplaceable at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola needs to have a backup player for the Spaniard, particularly considering the number of games he has to play every season.

Kalvin Phillips who recently joined West Ham United on loan was thought to be the perfect player for the role, but his inability to cope with the demand of the City boss relegated him to the bench, and was left with no other choice than to seek playing time elsewhere.

As City prepare to sell the Englishman to West Ham in the summer when his loan spell expires, they are also eager to bring in a replacement, and the Bayern Munich midfield icon, Kimmich has been identified as the perfect to become Rodri’s backup player.

Kimmich only has a contract at Allianz Arena until the summer of 2025, and there are speculations that he will not extend the contract. It was reported that the German international will seek a new challenge elsewhere, therefore, Bayern could be forced to sell him in the summer.

Journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Manchester City are currently leading the race for the signature of the 29-year-old midfielder even though Liverpool and Barcelona have also shown interest in him.

“Arguably the most concerning potential exit for Bayern is Joshua Kimmich, who has endured a tough season and is heading into the final year of his contract,” Jacobs told CaughtOffside.

“Bayern’s new director of sport, Max Eberl, will hold talks with the player. Kimmich is open to moving to the Premier League. Manchester City are exploring a move for him and believe he could gel well with Rodri.

“Liverpool have also been linked but there’s nothing advanced there to date. Barcelona are another club long-linked with Kimmich.

“Bayern don’t want to lose Kimmich but with his contract expiring in 2025 they may be forced to put him up for sale if fresh terms aren’t agreed.”
