Kalvin Phillips had a lot to deal with during his days at Manchester City but none of these challenges hurt him and his family like how Pep Guardiola described him when he returned to Man City training after the 2022 World Cup.
Philips was away with the England squad throughout the competition and when he returned to Manchester City after they were eliminated from the competition, Guardiola refused to accept his new weight. The Spaniard described him as overweight and this got Kalvin and his family, especially his mum angry.
However, he endured the situation at the Etihad, hoping that he would one day become Guardiola’s favourite. Unfortunately, the day never came and he had to leave the Premier League champions during the January transfer window.
He joined West Ham United on loan and will hope to secure a permanent deal with the Hammers when the loan deal expires.
Speaking about his time at Man City and the impact Guardiola’s words had on him and his family, Kalvin Phillips said: “When Pep came out and said I was overweight, he was right to do so but there are different ways to go about it.”
“I did not disagree with him, but obviously it took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City, I would probably say that. My family was not happy about it, either. Especially my mum.”
Kalvin Phillips who joined Manchester City from Leeds United also claimed that returning late to Manchester City training after the World Cup caused another problem between him and frustrated Guardiola.
He added: “People can say overweight – overweight for some people is like 10kg. I was probably 1.5kg over my weight target. Pep was obviously frustrated that I didn’t come back into training early, but it was just miscommunication between the people that worked at City and myself.”
