Kalvin Phillips says he felt ‘useless’ at Manchester City for his lack of game after he joined the Premier League champions in the summer of 2022. The Englishman had to move on to another Premier League club to regain his confidence.
Phillips secured a loan to West Ham United during the January transfer window and made his debut for the Hammers as a starter against Bournemouth, but his first match was ruined with his first touch of the match. The midfielder who received the ball in an uncomfortable position gifted Bournemouth their lone goal of the match by passing to his opponent.
Similarly, Kalvin Phillips was criticised for his performance against Manchester United last weekend. However, he insisted that he’s gradually returning to match fitness and looks forward to putting his endurable years at Manchester City behind him.
“It’s obviously a massive decision for me and my family, but I think it was a decision that I needed to make because I wasn’t getting much game time,” he told West Ham’s official website while speaking on his decision to move on from the Cityzens.
“The one thing that I wanted when I left Man City in January was to be back playing and to be enjoying myself playing football as well. When you don’t play football for so long, you kind of feel a little bit useless because you’ve not been doing anything. So, for me, it was just more coming to a good club with good fans and just enjoying my football again.”
The 28-year-old midfielder said he was sad when he discovered that he would have to leave Pep Guardiola’s side to secure regular games. He added that he had no choice but to accept the offer of moving to London which is a nice place to be.
“I was very sad when I knew that my next step had to be to move on, but I got over that quite quickly and was just more excited than anything to get down here and see the place and see how London is, which is very busy. I was very excited to get going.”
Kalvin Phillips will hope to regain his form and be able to convince Gareth Southgate to be part of the England squad for the forthcoming EURO 2024.
