John Stones Did What Has Never Happened In EPL History Against United

Jamie Carragher claims that John Stones did what he has never seen before in the history of the English Premier League when Manchester City played their local rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

John Stones since last season has become a joy to watch. Despite being a natural centre-back, the Englishman has mastered his role at the heart of City midfield. He effortlessly supports Rodrigo at the midfield and sometimes charges forward to initiate an attack.

While Phil Foden who scored a brace against the Red Devils stole the headlines, Jamie Carragher believes John Stones did some incredible things he had never seen before during the match.

According to Carragher, Stones took his hybrid role to another level against United, explaining that the defender was going from centre-half into the No.10 position and “running the game”.

The former Liverpool player mentioned some former and present players in the Premier League who have similar abilities to do what John Stones did, but none of them could do it better than the 29-year-old City defender.

According to The Sun, Carragher said: “We are watching something that I’ve never seen before in English football and I’ve been watching since the mid-80s.

“The only defender back then that you would class as a defender good on the ball would be Alan Hansen of Liverpool.

“I then remember watching [Franco] Beresi, who was pretty similar and would come out with the ball from the back, Rio Ferdinand, I think, was another one of those.

“The only one I can think that was doing what John Stones is doing now is Mathias Sammer around Euro ’96 for Germany. But John Stones is going from centre-back to No.10. We’ve never seen this before.”
