England Will Struggle At EURO 2024 Without Phil Foden – Neville Declares

The success of the English national team at the forthcoming EURO 2024 largely depends on Phil Foden, according to former Manchester United player Gary Neville and his compatriot, Roy Keane.

Phil Foden

The Manchester City Star has become a joy to watch this season and he has undoubtedly taken his game to the next, fantastic level. This has earned him the respect of many football pundits.

The City academic graduate delivered yet another incredible performance against Manchester United on Sunday to lead his side to a comfortable 3-1 victory despite conceding in the first 10 minutes of the match. He scored two goals, a fantastic strike to cancel out Marcus Rashford’s goal of the month contender, and scored the second a few minutes later before Erling Haaland sealed the win with a stoppage time finishing.

In his remarks, former Man Utd captain Gary Neville believes the English national team will struggle without Phil Foden, therefore, Gareth Southgate needs to play him in his best position.

Neville claimed that despite having many talented players at the national level, there seems to be something special about Phil Foden. He said the Manchester City player will easily get into any team in the world.

He said on the Gary Neville Podcast: “England have got Bellingham, they’ve got Kane, they’ve got Foden, but Foden is something really special.

“If we can’t make room for Phil Foden, and build around him, we’re struggling. Gareth [Southgate] has done a brilliant job, but Foden is something that is completely different. He would get into any team in the world, and we need to put him into his best position, whatever he feels that is, whatever Gareth thinks that is.”

Similarly, another former Man Utd captain Keane told Sky Sports that Phil Foden has to get into the England starting eleven at the EURO even though there is competition in the national squad.

“There’s great competition in that England squad and Gareth [Southgate] is very lucky but Foden has to be in that starting XI,” Keane said.

“As brilliant as he was going forward today, the other bits of the game, his running back and doing the job for the team. For me, this kid is an absolute team player. He has to be in that England team.”
