Getting playing time at Man City under Pep Guardiola is a huge challenge for any new player at the club. However, while some players managed to convince the Spanish Manager to secure regular football, the story is different for Sergio Gomez who has been struggling for regular matches since he the league champions.
Gomez has failed to break into the Man City starting eleven despite that he’s the only recognised left-back at the club. Guardiola preferred playing central defenders at his position and described his choice as perfect defending.
“I would say with four central defenders we defend properly in our box,” Guardiola said on the pitch, right after the Champions League final win over Inter Milan. “It’s the biggest step. Now we enjoy defending, and even if we make mistakes I have the feeling that we are defenders.”
Like Gomez, the new captain, Kyle Walker was a victim of Guardiola’s tactics last season. The Defender at a time lost his place and was on the bench during arguably the most iconic moment in the club’s history in Istanbul. In the summer transfer, Walker contemplated on leaving the Man City to Bayern Munich but had a change of mind after a meeting with the coach.
The Englishman has now become undroppable for Guardiola this season despite being 33-year-old. He has started all the City league matches and rewarded his boss with two assists.
Sergio Gomez might have the opportunity to turn things around soon, particularly with the alleged Pep Guardiola’s advice, urging him to reject any offers that may see him departing from the Etihad either on loan or permanently.
AC Milan recently explored the potential loan acquisition of the 23-year-old Spanish player but Guardiola appears to have convinced the defender to remain with the reigning Premier League champions.
Reports suggest that Gómez, initially contemplating a loan move due to limited playing time, engaged in discussions with Guardiola in the last few hours. Following their conversation, he has decided to continue his journey with Man City for the rest of the season.
