Angry Kevin De Bruyne Clashes With Fans After Euro Match

Kevin De Bruyne has become caught in a heated argument with his own fans at Euro 2024.

Belgium has had a rough start to their campaign in Germany, losing the first game to Slovakia before winning convincingly against Romania. Domenico Tedesco’s side finished second in the group after drawing 0-0 with Ukraine in Wednesday’s group decider.

That sets up a last-16 meeting against France on Monday, while first-placed Romania face a less daunting fixture against the Netherlands and are in the kinder side of the draw.

Unsurprisingly, Belgium fans are dissatisfied with their team’s performances thus far at Euro 2024, and they aired their frustration by booing the players after the final whistle. As captain, De Bruyne originally led his teammates towards the supporters, but the angry reception prompted the Manchester City star to turn around and tell the players to leave the pitch.

De Bruyne received further boos when he was announced as the the man of the match – his second of the tournament.

“We need these fans. We’ll need them against France. That’s all I have to say,” the 32-year-old said in a post-match press conference.

“We tried to win the match. We had goal-scoring opportunities, but we didn’t take any risks with the [late] corner because we knew we might concede a goal.

“If that happens, you’re out of the Euros. It’s a shame we didn’t manage to score before. We had opportunities and after that we just need the fans to stay with us.”

De Bruyne also had to deal with a green laser during the game which seemed to shine in his eyes as he stepped up to take several set-pieces.

“I saw a laser in my eye,” he said. “That’s it. I don’t know how many times it was, but I just pointed it out to the ref and that’s it.”

De Bruyne has earned 104 international caps and has scored 28 goals, including the second in last week’s 2-0 win over Romania.
